Electrolytes 101 - Adequate Hydration With Sole Water

Yikes! What an accident/health mishap will teach you!  In October of 2025 we went on a wonderful Fall Cruise to New England and Canada. Sadly, on an excursion to bike around a national park in Maine, I fell and injured my left knee.  It did not need any intervention, other than adequate healing time, but in the process my chiropractor introduced me to the fact that I was severely dehydrated! All that water I was religiously drinking was going straight to the potty because I did NOT have adequate electrolytes.  Most seniors do not. But this was news to me.  In the article below, I'll share what I learned and how to easily remedy this common situation that leaves our health and bodies compromised.

Do not purchase any Himalayan Salt product from any company other than "The Original Himalayan Crystal Salt" company as there are many untrustworthy vendors for this fantastic stuff.

Sufficient hydration is #1 for all organs. We know that! But as seniors, did you know we become less thirsty, and much less inclined to drink water? And EVEN WHEN WE DO, it may not be absorbed into cells and tissues????

This year we’ve watched numerous friends in their 70s and 80s be hospitalized for dehydration. One was experiencing falls that resulted in injuries, hospitalization and long term rehab… why the falls?  He had lost his sense of balance and stability.

THE MAIN REASON FOR THE IMBALANCE: He was dehydrated! prescribed medications FOR OTHER HEALTH CHALLENGES  WERE NOT WORKING BECAUSE OF THAT!!!! But that makes sense.  For medicines to work, they, like plants/animals/humans need WATER!

Then, my little bike accident in late October of this year that resulted in a knee injury (severe compression/sprained tendon) put the pieces together: My chiropractor, working with me after accident and knee injury informed me that he could tell I was severely dehydrated.

All that water I have always been drinking? He told me that after an injury, excessive exercise, a bout of diarrhea or vomiting, or an illness .... and for many of us on a day-to-day basis due to aging ... all that water we're chugging is often going straight to the potty without being absorbed because we have depleted our ELECTROLYTES that allow water to enter into the cells.  THIS IS CRITICAL FOR HEALTHY FUNCTIONING OF ALL ORGANS.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY TO SUPPLEMENT, AS THE BODY WILL NATURALLY FLUSH ANY EXCESS ELECTROLYTES.

Basically, electrolytes are various essential minerals found in the blood, sweat and urine. The most common electrolytes are bicarbonate, calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphate, potassium and sodium.

They're called electrolytes because they have an electric charge – positive or negative – when dissolved in fluids, such as blood. Those electric charges signal muscles and nerves. Our bodies would not work without electrolytes.

In fact, electrolytes are often referred to as "gatekeepers". The phrase "electrolytes are the gatekeeper" refers to their essential role in controlling the movement of water across cell membranes and regulating nerve and muscle functions. They manage how water is distributed throughout the body and enable crucial cellular communication.

"The simplest way to think about electrolytes is that they are essential minerals and that they provide many different things that the body needs," said Dr. Sara Rosenkranz, an associate professor in the department of kinesiology and nutrition sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

"They have a number of different, really important and critical functions," Rosenkranz said, including

1. Helping to regulate blood pressure,
2. Supporting blood glucose
3. Maintaining heart rate and rhythm and most essential:
4. Balancing the body's and organ's critical water needs.

Shocker: Nearly all that water I was drinking was going straight to the potty and not penetrating anything on a cellular level.

My chiropractor showed me what he drinks when he's on the go:  A product called "LMNT" that is about $1.50 to $2.00 per packet and is available at Amazonat their website and at Walmart.

But Wow. That $1.50 -- $2.00 per serving on a daily basis really adds up!

Yes, all the sports drinks are convenient and good for this purpose too!  But they're not free either!

He suggested to both me and my husband that we need a full dose of electrolytes every day ... and what he recommends to all of his senior patients: SOLE WATER! (Pronounced So-Lay).

What is SOLE WATER?

He says that we don’t get the volume of minerals we used to from our food, this is largely because our soil is so over farmed that many of the nutrients that were once so readily available are now diminished.  The overly processed food that are part of our lives often do not have these beneficial minerals.

BUT!!!! We can easily obtain these vital trace minerals and micro-nutrients from Himalayan pink salt!

When we re-mineralize with this proven source, we reduce muscle cramps, constipation, restore alkaline/acidity, regulate blood sugar levels, clear up congestion in the lungs and give us much needed energy ... and better sleep! HELLO???!!!!

He was emphatic:  USE THIS ONE DOCUMENTED, AUTHORIZED SOURCE FOR HIMALAYAN SALT ONLY. There are a lot of Himalayan Salt vendors out there.  Do NOT trust them all to be the same!  This is the only one he trusts for making Sole Water:

ORIGINAL HAMALAYAN CRYSTAL SALT.

These rocks in this cute little jar will provide all the electrolytes you need for up to 4 months! Use 1-2 teaspoons mixed with 8-12 oz of regular water ON a daily basis first thing in the morning. Drink slowly for best results.

And that's about $.20 a serving.  Ha!

All the info on how to use are included.  Simply add filtered water to the rocks in the jar that will become saturated within 24 hours with 84 trace minerals and a perfect balance of electroytes. Refill the jar when it gets low. These rocks that create the super-saturated sole water will last for up to four months!

There's lots more to learn about electrolytes and their importance, but that's good enough for now and you can always Google to learn more on your own!

HOW TO USE YOUR SOLE WATER

1. Pour filtered water (from the fridge or bottled – or even tap water) over the rocks to nearly the top of the jar.  Put on the cork lid.

2. Let it sit for 24 hours. The water will then be fully saturated and ready to use.

3.   IMPORTANT: PUT THE JAR AND A 12 oz. GLASS WHERE YOU WILL SEE/USE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.

4.  Put 1 or 2 teaspoons of sole water into a 12-oz. glass of room temperature (or warm if you prefer) water. For added benefits, add the juice of ½ lemon.  You may want to add a drop or two of water enhancer drops.

5. DRINK SLOWLY, over 10-20 minutes as you are getting your day started.  Best if used on an empty stomach, leaving 30 minutes before you eat.

When the water level gets too low to dip out any more water, simply fill to the top again. The rocks will last 2-4 months and slowly dissolve. If you find this is something you want to continue, let me know and I will send you the Amazon link to buy more authentic Original Himalayan Salt crystals.
